On the bank

Onewőnè morning a littlè rabbit sat on a bañk.

Hê prickèd hiś ėàŕś and listénèd tótö thé trit-trot, trit-trot ofuv a pôný.

A gig wáśwoś cőming álong thé road; it wáśwoś drivén bŷ Mr. McGreŕ, and bėsîdè him sat Mrs. McGreŕ in her best bonnét.

Hop, skip

Aś söön aś they had passèd, littlè Benjámín Bunný slid down intö thé road, and set off—with a hop, skip, and a jump—tótö cåll upon hiś rėlâtionś, whö livèd in thé wōōd at thé back ofuv Mr. McGreŕ's gardén.

The Hole

That wōōd wáśwoś fūll ofuv rabbit hôlèś; and in thé neatést, sandìêst hôlè ofuv åll livèd Benjámín's āùnt and hiśuśínś—Flopsý, Mopsý, Cottón-tail, and Pêter.

Ôld Mrs. Rabbit wáśwoś a widôw; shê èàŕnèd her living bŷ knitting rabbit-wōōl mitténś and muffateeś (Î őnçèwőnçè bøùght a pãir at a bázāàŕ). Shê ålsô sôld herbś, and rôśèmãrý tea, and rabbit-tóbaccô (which iś whåt wê cåll lavénder).

Ears

Littlè Benjámín did not verý much wantwont tótö see hiś Āùnt.

Hê câmè round thé back ofuv thé fir-tree, and nėàŕlý tumblèd upon thé top ofuv hiśuśín Pêter.

In a handkerchief

Pêter wáśwoś sitting bŷ himself. Hê lōōkèd pōōrlý, and wáśwoś dressèd in a red cottón pockét-hañdkerchièf.

The Whisper

"Pêter," sãìd littlè Benjámín, in a whisper, "whö haś got yøùr clôthèś?"

Pêter rėplîèd, "Thé scãŕècrôw in Mr. McGreŕ's gardén," and dėscrîbèd how hê had bėèn-been châsèd ábout thé gardén, and had droppèd hiś shöèś and coat.

Littlè Benjámín sat down bėsîdè hiśuśín and áŝŝūrèd him that Mr. McGreŕ had gonè out in a gig, and Mrs. McGreŕ ålsô; and çertáìnlý for thé day, bėcauśè shê wáśwoś weáring her best bonnét.

Led away

Pêter sãìd hê hôpèd that it wōūld rain.

At this point ôld Mrs. Rabbit's voiçè wáśwoś hèàŕd insîdè thé rabbit hôlè, cålling: "Cottón-tail! Cottón-tail! fetch sőmè morè camómîlè!"

Pêter sãìd hê thøùght hê might feel better if hê went for a wålk.

Looking Down on the Garden

They went áway hand in hand, and got upon thé flat top ofuv thé wåll at thé bottóm ofuv thé wōōd. Fróm hėŕè they lōōkèd down intö Mr. McGreŕ's gardén. Pêter's coat and shöèś werè plainlý tótö bê seen upon thé scãŕècrôw, toppèd with an ôld tam-ô'-shanter ofuv Mr. McGreŕ's.

Falling

Littlè Benjámín sãìd: "It spoilś pêòplè's clôthèś tótö sqυeezè under a gâtè; thé proper way tótö get in iś tótö clîmb down a peàŕ-tree."

Pêter fell down heàd first; but it wáśwoś ofuv nô conséqυénçè, aś thé bed bėlôw wáśwoś newlý râkèd and qυîtè soft.

It had bėèn-been sôwn with lettùçėś.

Footmarks

They left a grèât mãný odd littlè fōōtmarks åll ôver thé bed, espećiállý littlè Benjámín, whö wáśwoś weáring clogś.

Tam

Littlè Benjámín sãìd that thé first thing tótö bê dőnè wáśwoś tótö get back Pêter's clôthèś, in order that they might bê âblè tótö use thé pockét-hañdkerchièf.

They tōōk them off thé scãŕècrôw. Theŕè had bėèn-been rain dûring thé night; theŕè wáśwoś wåter in thé shöèś, and thé coat wáśwoś sőmèwhåt shruñk.

Benjámín trîèd on thé tam-ô'-shanter, but it wáśwoś töö big for him.

Filling the pockets

Then hê suĝĝestėd that they shōūld fill thé pockét-hañdkerchièf with őnĩónś, aś a littlè preśént for hiś Āùnt.

Pêter did not seem tótö bê ėnjoying himself; hê kept hėáring noiśėś.

Munching lettuce

Benjámín, on thé contrãrý, wáśwoś perféctlý at hômè, and âa lettùçè leaf. Hê sãìd that hê wáśwoś in thé habít ofuv cőming tótö thé gardén with hiś fāther tótö get lettùçėś for their Sunday dinner.

(thé nâmè ofuv littlè Benjámín's pāpá wáśwoś ôld Mr. Benjámín Bunný.)

Thé lettùçėś çertáìnlý werè verý fînè.

Dropping Onions

Pêter did not eat ãnýthing; hê sãìd hê shōūld lîkè tótö gô hômè. Preśéntlý hê droppèd hālf thé őnĩónś.

He boldly led the way

Littlè Benjámín sãìd that it wáśwoś not possíblè tótö get back up thé peàŕ-tree with a load ofuv veĝètáblèś. Hê led thé way bôldlý tówårdś thé őther end ofuv thé gardén. They went álong a littlè wålk on plañks, under a sunný, red brick wåll.

Thé mîçè sat on their dòorsteps cracking cherrý-stônèś; they wiñkèd at Pêter Rabbit and littlè Benjámín Bunný.

Dropped Again

Preśéntlý Pêter let thé pockét-hañdkerchièf gô ágãìn.

Hearing Noises

They got ámőngst flõwer-pots, and frâmèś, and tubś. Pêter hèàŕd noiśėś wòŕthan ever; hiś èŷèś werè aś big aś lollý-pops!

Hê wáśwoś a step or twö in frőnt ofuv hiśuśín when hê suddénlý stoppèd.

Cat

This iś whåt thôśè littlè rabbíts saw round that corner!

Littlè Benjámín tōōk onewőnè lōōk, and then, in hālf a minute less than nô tîmè, hê hid himself and Pêter and thé őnĩónś underneath a larĝè baskét....

Cat Sniffing Basket

Thé cat got up and stretchèd herself, and câmè and sniffèd at thé baskét.

Perhaps shê lîkèd thé smell ofuv őnĩónś!

Ãnýway, shê sat down upon thé top ofuv thé baskét.

Cat on Basket

Shê sat theŕè for fîvè hõυŕś.

Î cannot draw yöü a piurè ofuv Pêter and Benjámín underneath thé baskét, bėcauśè it wáśwoś qυîdark, and bėcauśè thé smell ofuv őnĩónś wáśwoś fėàŕful; it mâdè Pêter Rabbit and littlè Benjámín crŷ.

Thé sun got round bėhînd thé wōōd, and it wáśwoś qυîlâin thé afternöön; but still thé cat sat upon thé baskét.

Benjamin

At length theŕè wáśwoś a pitter-patter, pitter-patter, and sőmè bits ofuv morŕ fell fróm thé wåll ábővè.

Thé cat lōōkèd up and saw ôld Mr. Benjámín Bunný prançing álong thé top ofuv thé wåll ofuv thé upper terráçè.

Hê wáśwoś smôking a pîofuv rabbit-tóbaccô, and had a littlè switch in hiś hand.

Hê wáśwoś lōōking for hiś sőn.

Benjamin Pounces

Ôld Mr. Bunný had nô ópinĩón whåtever ofuv cats.

Hê tōōk a trėmendòús jump off thé top ofuv thé wåll on tótö thé top ofuv thé cat, and cuffèd it off thé baskét, and kickèd it intö thé greenhousè, scratching off a handfūl ofuv fur.

Thé cat wáśwoś töö much surprîśèd tótö scratch back.

By the Ears

When ôld Mr. Bunný had drivén thé cat intö thé greenhousè, hê lockèd thé dòor.

Then hê câmè back tótö thé baskét and tōōk out hiś sőn Benjámín bŷ thé ėàŕś, and whippèd him with thé littlè switch.

Then hê tōōk out hiś nephëw Pêter.

Marching

Then hê tōōk out thé hañdkerchièf ofuv őnĩónś, and marchèd out ofuv thé gardén.

In the Garden

When Mr. McGreŕ rėturnèd ábout hālf an hõυŕ lâter hê óbśervèd sevèrál thingś which perplexèd him.

It lōōkèd aś thôùgh sőmè persón had bėèn-been wålking åll ôver thé gardén in a pãir ofuv clogśônlý thé fōōtmarks werè töö rídicûlòúslý littlè!

Ålsô hê cōūld not understand how thé cat cōūld havè manáĝèd tótö shut herself up insîdè thé greenhousè, locking thé dòor upon thé outsîdè.

Home Again

When Pêter got hômè hiś mőtherŕgâvè him, bėcauśè shê wáśwoś sô glad tótö see that hê had found hiś shöèś and coat. Cottón-tail and Pêter fôldėd up thé pockét-hañdkerchièf, and ôld Mrs. Rabbit strung up thé őnĩónś and hung them fróm thé kitchén çêìling, with thé bunchėś ofuv herbś and thé rabbit-tóbaccô.
